i am looking at a 1977 bayliner saratoga that is for sale. but it has a bad gimbal bearing. i have no clue where to even start with this project. i have read on some of the volvos you have to pull the motor to change them and not on others. is this something i can even tackle myself of is it just to much? any suggestions would be great..

Re: volvo 280 gimbal?????

That year Volvo did not use "Gimbal" bearings. They do have ball bearings on the drive shaft that fits in the engine flywheel cover.
Yes, you have to remove the engine to remove the flywheel cover and change the bearings.
Here is a thread that tells what it takes to change those bearings.
