Volvo 280 / 270

What exactly is the difference between the two? will the lower and upper off a 270 bolt up to the 280. Will the gears be interchangable? Are the drive shaft bearings the same? THe reason is i have lots of parts for a 270 but have a 280 on my ciera sunbridge 2450 with 305 in it. the gear oil is milky in the 280 and the drive shaft bearings are grumpy.

I guess what I would want to do is put the whole drive assy from the transom shield back.
Would the 270 bolt right up to the transom holes and bell housing off the 280?
Would the coupler shaft diameter be the same between the two?

In a word, NO. But ------ There are so many small changes between some of the parts that no one can answer your question exactly. There were changes in 270's with the SN breaks. What will work on one 270 won't on the next. Now, move up to the 280 and things really start changing.
Putting the whole drive on may or may not work, depends on how old the 270 is.
Splines were probably course on the 270's and may be on some of the early 280, then there is the pin in the helmut. 2 styles of single bolt built into the pin and the 2 bolt pin. They have to be the same or you end up rebuilding the upper gear box or changing helmuts. Which then gets to different bushings and ...............

i am trying to replace the 280 with everything from the 270 except the bellhousing. I was thinking that if the ujoints were the same between the two then possibly swaping out the yokes. the serial number from the 270 is pz nr 2743791 and the one on the 280 is corroded away so i cant tell that. Would a 280 bellhousing slide into the 270 hole through the transome? i have the complete package except the bellhousing on the 270.
what year is this 270 from? Id like to try and make it work cause the 270 is a fresh unit with all new stuff inside and out. from what i see the u joints are the same. the only thing i see is a real problem is the exaust. are the mating flange bolt patterns the same? im gonna pick your brain cause your the volvo expert!!

Sounds like the 280 has to come off anyway! Why don't you just remove it, assess the parts that need repair or replacing and cross match them against the 270 stuff that you have. It will either be the same or it won’t be……………. You could spend days or weeks cross referencing part numbers and achieve nothing ……….until you pull the drive out and assess the damage! Good luck.

It bolted right up!!! I was thinking about rebuilding the one that was on there, but the oysters had taken over. It will need a weeks worth of sandblasting. The drive bearings and gears inside would of needed to be replaced, from water intrusion. I guess I should of taken that Volvo job I was offered a while back. Tooo expensive for me, Im not breaking out another thousand!! ...................yet. lol
Only thing left to do is put in prop seals and were good to go. Trying to figure out how to make a puller plate to yank out the bearing carrier in the lower.
