Volvo 275 trimming

I have a Volvo 275 on an '89 Bayliner and it won't trim while in gear. Is it not supposed to or is there something wrong with it? It hasn't worked since I got the boat last year.

The 275 drives don't have trim. Only an electro mechanical lift. Just putting it in gear is usually enough force to override the clutch in the mechanism and push the drive all the way down. The lift is used only to raise the drive out of the water for trailering.
