volvo 275 i/o oil fill level

Changed the gear oil in the bottom end and wondering where to stop filling.
The 275 has a dip stick at the top of the drive and it's about 6" long.
About 4" of it is flat on one side.
There is no full mark on the stick.
Is that the full range to stop filling or should i top it right to the hole ?

You think they would have put a mark or something.
What's the sense of having a dip stick if it's filled to the top ?

It takes about 2-3/4 quarts of ENGINE OIL to fill it up.
The top of the flat is full mark. As long as the oil level is somewhere on the flats, without the dipstick screwed in, the level is fine. I like to keep it into the upper quarter of the flat, but not over.
Allow plenty of time for the oil level to stabilize before calling it good.

I couldn't find the answer but now have peace of mind.
I've read about the engine oil here and if i recall SAE30 or 10W30 both work.
I've already pumped Quicksilver SAE90 i/o gear oil in the but will switch over next year to an engine oil.Any recommendations on a brand? I've been using Quicksilver in the engine,so it would be nice to use the same for both.

Don't use the 90 at all, replace it with the 30W. The slinger type pump doesn't work with the thicker lube very well.
The oil is a lot cheaper than a drive.

Yep, theres a impeller pump on the propshaft, that pushes oil up to the top bearings..run 30wt..
("SAE90 i/o gear oil in the but will switch over next year")
Better make it this year.....

Eeeek,
I'll heed that advice and look for some engine oil this year.
I presume 30W is the same as SAE30. Does it have to be Marine engine oil ?
Any recommendations on a brand ?

Any 30W will do. I seriously don't think there is such a thing as MARINE 30W.
