Volvo 270 with Tilt- no trim -

I just read the "smacked a log" thread and it's raising a question in my head. I have a 270 outdrive and it had a retaining pawl the locks it in the down position. So the motor must be all the way down when Operating in reverse and can be Moderately tilted when in F (for shallow areas) How does this outdrive fail normally when hitting a submerged object ? will it ever kick up when in the full down locked position ? Do the retaining pawls fail at a given point and let it kick up ? Or should I just prepare to Abandon ship if I hit anything at some speed ?
Just another burning question.....
Thanks !
Joe.

My last log ended up ripping most of the paw off. I think it is supposed release somehow though.

The lockdown mechanism would have been easier to understand if Volvo had named it after it's function. A Reverse Lock.
When adjusted properly, it will not be locked down when in forward, only when in reverse to keep the drive from kicking up out of the water when in reverse.

There's an old video from the 60's showing Jim Wynne and others jumping Volvo powered boats off ski jumps to demonstrate the release ability of the Volvo. They're hitting these jumps at huge speeds and landing and continuing on... crazy...

IF all the parts are in working order it will release when you hit something like a log in forward...trust me I know! The nice part is other than minor prop damage the outdrive doesn't take the brunt of the hit.

Not just putting the drive in forward is going to make it "unlock". It unlocks when the outdrive is pushing forward on the transom shield.
The paw is spring loaded as I am sure you know but when the drive pushes forward on the lock it will open the lock by pushing the mechanism "a little to far" past where it locks at. Being that it is simi unlocked as you are going forward and then you hit something the drive's paw moves past the locking mechanism to fast for the springs to close it on the locking bar. Thats the way its supposed to work. :)
The only way to test it is have someone see if the paw moves when someone pushes the drive hard up against the stops on the transom shield. Have them hold the lock in the same place and then see if you can pick the drive up.
Sorry but thats the best way I can explain it.

interesting - that explains why they were hitting the ski jumps full speed.

So I guess if you see a stump ahead, gun it!, don't pull back to neutral and coast into it....
