Do I have to remove the outdrive on my 1982 Volvo 270 outdrive (powered by an AQ125B) to replace the gasket that seals the fresh water intake elbow (looks like old chevy thermostat housing and is located just below the lower bellows -- held on by two stainless Allen bolts)?

Any tricks, like moving the bellows just above this forward?

Otherwise, I am going to have to pull the outdrive intermediate and lower section, and I bought this boat to avoid all this intrigue, ya know?

most I can get by cutting down an allen wrench.

I just remove the upper gear box. IF your bellows is over a few years old, you might want to consider replacing it at the same time. If you do remove the upper gear box, you will need new orings to reinstall it, and be careful of the shims between the upper and the intermediate housings.

Re: Volvo 270 water intake elbow removal

Thanks for the help. If I remove it (water intake elbow on 270 Volvo outdrive) I will try the cut down Allen wrench first -- cutting hardened steel is always the sport of kings. Then I will do it the right way.

I do agree that doing it right first is a good idea because it outdrives that outdrives have to be disassembled, oiled, greased, bolts Orings, gaskets, O-rings, bearings checked, etc., every few years so that when you have to take them apart it is not metal sculpture.

The engine is getting 200 little warm, about 200+ degrees. I had the timing 5BTDC just shy of 5BTDC but have moved it 10 BTDC just about 10+ BTDC. I am getting conflicting info about what the timing should be. My repair manual differs from the corresponding on line info about the same engine in a Volvo car.

Also, my centrifugal advance was not working right before WD40, so I sprayed in some WD40 and it worked a lot better; but I am going to disassemble it and Im the centrifugal advance plates. I'm thinking timing may look good at idle but may be retarded up RPMs the acceleration and at high RPM's. Maybe that is why the valve cover has that crazy sticker that I can't quite 33 but BTDC to 4200 'timing 33 degrees BTDC at 4200 RPM.'

Any more wisdom from you's guys will be respectfully entertained. Thanks for Owooh us floating.

Re: Volvo 270 water intake elbow removal

Stick that car manual in the car and get yourself the "REAL" Volvo service manuals for your engine and drive. Then you may find a lot of your problems clear up by using the proper specs and information for a Marine engine.
The Engine manual PN from Volvo is 7739856
The one for your 270 outdrive is 7724371.

Your base timing at 750 rpm should be 6°BTDC
at 4200 rpm you should have between 32° and 35° BTDC.
Before setting the base timing, make sure your dwell is 62°±3°. I've found any of the Volvo rubber band engines work best at 62° or 63°

Roger that -- 6 before at 62-63 dwell -- yes, it is an AQ125B (according to lettering on carb spark arrester), and my Chilton's or whatever says 6 before. I just disassembled the distrib down to the advance plates (did not remove plates, though) and put some Volvo axle bearing grease where they travel and some WD40 on their 'posts' where the C-clips are.

If I get the official Volvo manuals I'm going to get a business license and a tax number with them.

Will let you know how this runs out -- with timing and dwell dialed in.

Thanks again from downstream.
