the mechanical tilt mechanism acts erratically-
red light on dashboard stays lit even when the unit is down all the way, sometimes it won't tilt up at all. I inspected the electrical connections around the relays and all look ok, no corrosion, etc. When the light stays on at the dashboard, if I tap the top of the cover on the electrical box at the tilt motor, it goes off. that electrical box is loosely sitting on top of the mechanical part- and the two screws that go through the lid don't attach it to any thing.

Any suggestions and thanks.

Joe

Re: volvo 270 tilt problem

Hi Joe, the old tilt is getting old and they can become a bit of a nighmare to repair.

Need to start with a manual and trace wires/relays - see what's not working.

This may help:

http://dougrussell.com/partscatalog/volvo_omc/index.cfm?fuseaction=comp&group=1887&GroupList=1885,1864,1863,1873,1874,1868,1862,1861,1865,1884,1883,1867,1871,1872,1869,1878,1879,18 80,1881,1882,1866,1887,1870,1886,1875,1877

With mine, the control box went to the big outdrive graveyard in the sky many, many years ago. It is now just simply 3 wires going into the elec motor. - up - down.

Aldo

Re: volvo 270 tilt problem

Joe, I have had the same problems with the tilt mechanism on my 280.
Same problem with microswitch under the cover + relay failure.
My eventual solution was to remove ALL the bits from under the lid and relocate the power supply and relays into a sealed box that I fixed to the inside of transom. I refitted the microswitch back in its proper location and rewired the lot.
I also found that if I tightened the 2 cover screws the microswitch would fault.
Solution was the 2 cover screws are now just seated and I can rotate the housing with a little pressure around the mounting spindle.
I was hampered originally by the fact that other fingers had been under the cover before me and some of the system was not wired correctly.
But I beat it all the the finish.

Hope this helps you.
Regards
Peter

Re: volvo 270 tilt problem

thanks aldo and peter for the ideas.

Peter, the prior owner also worked on that box on mine since the two cover screws don't really fasten anything down and I can rotate the box around the spindle too. Sounds like I will have to check the wiring and relays to see if one is faulty.

Aldo- did you wire it without the relays and switch or am I misunderstanding you?

Re: volvo 270 tilt problem

It was already 'butchered' when I bought the boat. The little elec motor was always 'live' when your finger was on the switch - very dangerous.

My plan was to search for a good secondhand microswitch/relay box. In the meantime, I moved the switch to the rear of the boat (just inside the transom, so I could see the outdrive as I was tilting) and I added a 30amp fuse. I have since sold the boat and never got around to finding a control box.

Aldo

Joe,
The 2 long screws each have a nut underneath the box that fit below the shoulder of the tilt rod housing. They dont need to be very tight at all, just nipped enough to hold the switch box down onto the housing. You can still rotate the plastic box around the tube even with the nuts fitted.

Peter
