Volvo 270 Outdrive

Am I reading the manual correctly in that it just needs 10w/40 oil? I have never worked on a I/O before but was expecting that the outdrive would neen gear oil like an outboard.

welcome. i believe you need lower unit lubricant oil. my merc 140 i/o uses 80w90, but hey, you have the manual, right? you will need a pump to put it in the lower unit. take the vent screw out and pump from the bottom drain up until it comes out through the vent. good luck!

Incorrect, The 270 uses motor oil not gear oil

Follow the manual.

The 270 is a cone clutch and the Merc is a dog clutch, thus the different oil.

Also you do not pump the oil in on a 270. Drain and fill using the dipstick to check your levels.

10w/40 it is then. it just felt strange to me so I figured I would ask. I hope to have it running this weekend.

I just replaced some bushings and the reverse lock on my AQ270 and am still not very pleased, would like to replace the entire drive with something more modern and with trim.

Has anyone replaced the 270 with something newer like an SX?
