Volvo 270 Outdrive Repairs.

I own a merc I/O, but a buddy of mine picked up a Bayliner with a Volvo engine and outdrive. After straightening out the PO's wiring mess and getting the engine running, we dropped it off at the Marina for bellows etc. I know nothing about Volvo outdrives, so I didn't want to touch it.

Two weeks later, they are still to busy to look, so thanks to a search here, we were able to pull the upper and bellows in 45 minutes. Thanks!

Anyways, the seal that the yoke? slips into on the engine looks crusty, any advice to replacing it?

The ujoints are pretty rough too, are these user replacable? I've done automotive before, but not a double joint.

Do we use anything to seal the upper to the lower?

Thanks!

Re: Volvo Outboard Repairs.

If there is water in the bellow, you have rust on the yokes on both ends. This will destroy the seal in the engine bellhousing and let in water to the bearing in the bellhousing, and there is a yoke in the upper gear box. they both need checked for rust and water.
The upper gear box can be pulled and the yoke and seal replaced (with a manual and proper tools) the ujoints can be replaced by anyone that knows how to replace ujoints.
If the bellhousing bearing have water in them, the engine gets pulled to replace them BEFORE they lock up and destroy the bellhousing and shaft. and you really don't want that to happen.

Thanks Don. I'll get a better look at the bearing in the bellhousing tomorrow and see what the damage is.

Well, it's not pretty. Looks like the bellows have been split for a long time. The ujoints are sloopy and rusty, the primary shaft (proper name?) is rusty, the seals are trashed, and the bearing in the bellhousing is dry and rusty. Ordered a ton of parts today. Busy weekend ahead for me ;)

On a positive note, looks like my boat will be ready for the weekend.

i need to order new yokes and u joints and a flywheel due to water getting into my bellows and then my bell housing. where are you getting all these parts you said you ordered. i have a volvo AQ170 engine and a 270 drive? i am having problems finding at least the flywheel for now.
