Just bought a 1978 boat with a Volvo AQ 140 and looks like I got taken.
Started and ran fine on land and checked compression was good across all four and guy claimed he had fixed this same problem I'm now having after doing a variety of things but appears he didn't. He rebuilt carbs, drained fuel tank, put in new inline filter and water separator, plugs, changed points over to electronic ignition and also says previous owner put new wires and fuel pump although thinks pump might not be marine quality. Well of course it started and ran fine for the first 15 minutes out on the water today and then suddenly just started stumbling at lower RPM and wouldn't idle. Pulled plugs and all looked perfect. Temperature was good and wasn't overheating. He had removed the plastic blow back spark arrestor unit that sits on top of the motor stating in was neccessary and the hose coming from the oil filler cap that normally goes to that unit just hung down beside the engine and there did appear to be exhaust coming out of this tube and a small amount of oil residue.
As you can well imagine I'm pretty choked. I'm a weekend mechanic and have done head gaskets, rings on my bike, timing, new valves etc. but not so much on the fuel/ignition side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
