A long time back Skinnywater replied to a post of mine- I needed to find the wire diagram for the tach. Well black with yellow tracer he said was the 12v source, the grey was signal.

Now at idle I have 5.5 volts to the tach on the b/y wire. Now is the no workee tach due to this, or is that an average reading at idle? Basically, my tach does not work any more and I need to find the problem before I buy a new tach.Oh the grey has low AC voltage (I can't recall the reading) that increases with RPM.

Purple is normally 12v power that is controlled by the switch. The gray wire is correct.

I don't have a purple wire in the tach circuit. I have Black w/ yellow tracer which is supposed to be power, grey for signal, black for ground. Now I get five and a half volts on the black/yellow. What I ask is this- should I have twelve volts there, and is that why my tach does not work?

Yes you need 12V. Industry standard black/yellow is used to turn the motor off, gray is tach signal, black is ground and purple is 12V that comes from the ignition switch.

not on japanese motors

just give it a 12v power on somewhere else and see if it works
5.5v sounds like a bulb

Re: Voltage to tach Honda 45

So can anybody with a Honda that has a working tach PLEASE go out, start the engine and pull the bloody black wire with the yellow tracer off and check the supply voltage with a meter and tell me what they have?
