If the '96 is like the '95 with a serial number within 50,000 of yours, there are 4 yellow wires coming from the stator (under the flywheel) that go to the rear center of the engine. These wires connect to two rectifier/regulator assemblies which are under the mounting plate for the tilt/trim relays and 6 pulse modules.
4 nuts get the cover plate off and there they are. The gray wire is for the tach and the top one is the only one connected to the tach.....only need one signal. The reds are rectified voltage out and ground is via the case to the engine block cover. Both feed the battery @ 20 amperes max each for a total of 40 amps. Having just been in there day B4 yesterday, I can tell you, when they both are working, the battery charges fast.
