Voltage question?

I was struggling with a tachometer problem. At first I thought it was the Tach because the rectifier tested ok but then I tested the rectifier again and it tested bad useing Joe Reeves test method. I just replaced the rectifier and started the engine, the tachometer is working great now. However I noticed my volt gauge is now reading 16 volts when the engine is running. I think it was reading 13.5 before the new rectifier. Is this a problem?

Re: Voltage question?

You probably have an unregulated rectifier. The voltage goes up w/ RPM increase.

Re: Voltage question?

Up around 16V on an unregulated system is normal. Some electronic accessories don't like that. One would think that the accessory mfrs would design their product with built-in voltage control if it is a problem--wouldn't one? I mean, they do know it is going to be used on a boat, right?
