I have a 94 Force 90HP left me stranded. After the tow and over $300 in diagnostics the repair guy says "new reeds and carb rebuild MIGHT help". Compression is shot in #3 (40psi) #1 and #2 are close to 120psi. I talk to a buddy from back home and he says pull the head and check it out.

I did that and #1 looks good. #2 looks like someone beat it with a ballpeen hammer to the point all the markings are worn off the top of the piston. It also has slight disfigurement on the left edge. #3 has large disfigurement on the left edge. The disfigurements look like the edge bubbled up and in, or almost like when you chip the edge of a dinnerplate, but instead of the piece missing, it kinda pushed up and toward center on itself.

Questions are, a) is it worth replacing the powerhead or just buy a new motor? b) does anyone in the Richomnd area do this type of work and it WON'T cost me an arm and a leg? I could do it myself, but time and space are my issues. I'd have to rent a storage space or work outside (which with only doing a little here and there makes it hard to keep pieces unlost and dry.)

Comments appreciated.

You are looking at a complete rebuild. For what it would cost to have someone else do it you could find a good used motor. There are a lot of them out there right now. Just my opinion.

I appreciate that and agree, except I haven't a clue where to find one! Typically, every motor I find seems to be attached to a boat. I don't seem to be able to find used motors alone. I found a site for remanufactured, but they are in the $4000.00 range and more than I'm looking to spend. Any resource will be helpful.
