I think my Vire 6 is on its last legs.One of the reasons is when I have the engine running at cruising speed, it dies when I reduce the revs to idle, anyone have any idea how to prevent that happening?
Failing that, I have sourced a Yanmar 1gm-10 for £700, Before I commit to buy, what should I look for/ask about it?

Diesel has a constant air flow with variable fuel volume, unlike gas that has both. replace the fuel filters and air filter first. Next in line is compression. A tired motor may run at higher rpm, but die at idle, however there is usually smoke indicating unburned or 'overfueling'. If these check good, fuel pump is where I would look next. Injectors won't fail all together, you'll have an issue with a particular cylinder. As far as what engine to buy...same concerns as any engine, will it fit your particular application and if not what would it take to mate it to the drive/vessel. Whats the load and intended use. Generally speaking, you would be better off rebuilding what you have or finding a direct replacement. I know this is pretty generic, but I hope it gets you going in the right direction. I'm sure others will chime in....

To be more precise, the Vire is a single cylinder 2 stroke 6 hp device. The fuel pump is a seperate piece of kit, is newer and runs fine. I do believe that it is old age affecting the run-to-idle stall problem, but how much to cure the problem? (the whole boat only cost me £3000 so I don't want to go spending a fortune)

Re: Vire to Yanmar?

Googled your motor/s and pretty much all applies. Not sure what your hourly rates are over there, but generally, rebuild is less than new. Since this is auxillary power, what it's in, how it's mounted etc should weigh in on your course of action. Buying used is always a gamble. How was it used, how was it maintained etc. Wouldn't be good to refit a used motor, only to find out three months later it's on it's last legs as well. Also, it shows the VIRE as a petrol fueled and Yanmar is a diesel....Although I have direct eastern European roots, not sure if you guys refer to gas and/or diesel as 'Petrol'...

Gas = Gasoline = Petrol
Diesel = Diesel

Petrol to diesel no problem, diesel to petrol is a different kettle of fish!
