Going to be redoing the cabin of our cuddy cabin boat this winter. The wife and i are in a dead heat over replacing the cushions with fabric (like they are now, 24 year old Boat) or replacing the fabric with matching vinyl to match the exterior seats. We always put a sheet down to sleep on when we overnight so the vinyl wouldn't be sticking to us.

What do you have in your boats? What would you do?

I prefer fabric... Vinyl just wouldn't look right for an interior. IMHO

Unless you like to eat chili-cheese fries down there... then by all means, go with vinyl. LOL

Depends on what you mean by "dead heat"?? Is that one vote for vinyl and one for fabric, or both undecided??
If your wife is voting for one, then your question is answered  If you're both undecided, then my wife says go with fabric!!

Sunbrella make fabric for interiors, such as cushions, etc and I have also seen aless expensive alternatives to Sunbrella as well out there on the web. Periodically ShipShape TV re-show some episodes where they refurb the cabin interior of a cruiser. Has some good ideas in it.

I've had vinyl cushions, granted good quality vinyl, on my last boat. I have fabric on this one. After 4 years I got a quote from a local shop to recover them in vinyl. With vinyl I don't have to worry about throwing something wet down there. Less problems with dampness (mildew) not to mention easier to clean should something happen.

Vinyl just like leather wreaks of sweating but it does resist the water...other than where it's is sewn together. Fabric on the other hand does breathe and the reduces the sweating, and you know where. If you are talking about in a cuddy , out of the weather, hands down fabric. Check out your car seats....vinyl or leather, same problem, even when they punch holes in the leather for the uppetys that think that they have to have leather.....so much for the uppetys. I have had leather seats and never again will I buy a vehicle with anything but fabric. My money, my equipment, my buttox, my decision. You make your own decisions.

Cockpits are in the open air, cabins are basically small dungeons with little light and ventilation and are notoriously humid. And those small dungeons are also too easy to throw wet life jackets and ski ropes and such down into...While vinyl may be good at repelling water, it ain't water PROOF. If water does get in, it'll be a long time getting out.

Fabric breathes, lets the cushions breathe, evaporate and dry out. Vinyl doesn't breathe, moisture can condensate onto the vinyl, and then it turns to mildew.
