I have inheirited an old outboard with red script lettering on the gas tank that says "ELTO" or "ECTO" and on the flywheel it says Outboard Motors Corp. Milwaukee Wis. Made in USA. The serial number is 6240749. I believe my father bought it second hand in the late 30's or early 40's. It is a two cylinder, rope start version, steel cylinders, aluminum housing, stainless exhaust. Am interested in possible restoration, although it sat outside, unprotected for about 20 years, I believe it would be possible. Can you advise year of manufacture, availability of manuals/parts? Thank you.
Mark

Re: vintage Outboard Motors Corp. outboard

Hi Mark,
Your motor is an ELTO (Evinrude Light Twin Outboard - a spinoff from Evinrude that eventually merged back with Evinrude and Lockwood to form OMC). The serial number doesn't match up with anything I have. The model 624 is a 25hp 4-cylinder and you note that yours is a 2 cylinder so I'm guessing that isn't the correct number. The era is definitely 1930s but I'd need more to go on than what you've given us... photo? model number?
- Scott

Thank your for the prompt reply, Scott. I have taken some pictures, and have a couple good ones of the serial number. It is clearly 6240749, and it is an ELTO twin. I don't know how to attach the photos to this reply. My e-mail address is merway@stny.rr.com.
Mark
