hi guys just want some advice as i just brought a boat/motor/trailer package and im a little unsure if this motor is pumping enough water i have asked a mechanic if the tell tail hose comes with a nozel and he said no its just a strait hose to the outlet heres the video (this video was takin with the engine on normal idle not fast idle)

at idle thats plenty, but feel the temp, if its hot then your clogged or need a new impellor

That doesn't look like plenty of waterflow to me at idle. The tell/tale should have a good solid stream at idle.I assume the engine is running on the hose with adequate pressure.Anyhoo, first insure that there is no restriction within the hose or the engine block fitting.Otherwise if hose pressure is adequate and no restricitions present,I'd guess that the waterpump and t/stats are due for replacement. What engine is pictured anyway?

theres no nozzle in the hose to build up more pressure and make the stream squirt out fast there no blockages i can see its a evinrude 140hp 1990 model

Re: (video) is this pumping enough water?

The updated waterpump kit for many John/Rude engines of that era eliminate the tell/tale restrictor and just utilize the stock hose routed through a grommet(supplied in kit) installed into the lower pan where the restrictor was and will specify which spring to reinstall in the T/stat assembly/s.In any case as with my 96 70 hp Rude the tell/tale hose without restrictor should produce a solid stream at idle. Not the dribble I see pictured in your above post. But hey...that's my 2 cents. It's your engine.

Mate it looks ok to me. that appears to be a fair diameter hose poking out the back. Add a small nozzle on that and it would strema out with good pressure I would expect.

It may be enough, it may not be. Regardless of service history, the very first thing you should do with any new-to-you OB is to change the impeller. It may be fine at idle - but you never know if it's taken a set until you pull it. There can't be anything much worse then overheating/blowing an engine because you didn't take the two hours and minimal cash to inspect and replace the impeller.

Agree with above, any new boat I immediately change the water pump and stats, they are a critical component of the cooling system, and should not be scrimped on.

While the lu is down, flush the cooling system to ensure adequate flow through the circuit.

Good or bad, you cannot test a water pump by running it on a garden hose. Water would flow even if you took the impeller completely out because the hose supplies pressure to force water through the cooling system.

I agree, the only way to ensure cooling safety is to know reasonably certain that the impeller is OK by putting in a new one. Don't settle for one that "looks good" I've seen a lot of those "looks good' ones burn up a motor.

100% agree with FR. You aren't going to drive your boat with a water hose squirting water into the motor(you can see the water squirting out between the muffs and lower unit in the video).

thanks for the replys i will book it in for a new water pump i just measure the hose and its outside dia is 14mm inside dia is 9mm the water that is coming out from the hose is cold and the width of the water is around 8-9mm heres a video of it i took yesterday afternoon while i was out at the lake the engine is on idle (not fast idle)

Re: (video) is this pumping enough water?

Not knowing much about that make/model, I'm sort of wondering if maybe that isn't excessive water??? Should it really have such a large hose and/or fitting? Should there be a restricted outlet fitting?

That probably is water that is being discharged before it goes through the cooling system. My thoughts are it is being wasted and should be restricted so it goes through the cooling system where it will do some good.

But those are just my thoughts....Hopefully, somebody that knows what they are talking about will speak up soon.

My 140hp Johnson of 1985 vintage looks very similar at idle. Stats, pump, etc all good. No obvious restrictions in the tell tale flow.
I would suggest checking the head temperatures to see just how much cooling you are getting. That should tell you a lot. Mine runs at the low end of the temp range.

Any other thoughts on the head temp thing ???

Re: (video) is this pumping enough water?

Without the nipple on the end of the hose I would say that is plenty of water, if you were to restrict that down to an 1/8'' pee hole it would spray pretty good.

Concure with several others, on muffs mine will barely pump but on the water I get a good straight stream.

If it is set up like mine where it is tapped for the pee hose is prior to where it goes into the engine and only flows a portion of the water going into the engine,it is only there to show you have water to the engine.

I say you are fine but if you have the money for a new pump better safe than sorry.

That statement makes me laugh Frank...kinda like Master Yoda asking if anyone can teach him to use a light saber! (Not trying to compare your age to Yoda's of course ;) )

Hey FR. Hopefully you have gotten over the negative experience and start being more active on the board. You are an expert on the older motors and really helped me out this past summer. You are too good to not have your voice heard.
