Anyone have an opinion on the relative capabilities of these cameras?

Camera:

1/4" Sony CCD Image Sensor
420 TV Lines, Horizontal
3.6mm Lens
Signal: NTSC
Night Vision Min. Light: 0 Lux (IR On)
IR Irradiation Distance: up to 65'
Operation Temperature: -25?F~122?F
Weatherproof: Yes
Power: 12V DC
Mount: Wall
Video Connector: BNC
Power Connector: RCA 12V DC

These are the cameras that come with a Zmodo security system, w/ 500gb DVR, for $189.95 that is being offered on Woot. I am interested in getting a system so that we can see out front of our 3 car garage and driveway. That area is not visible from inside the house and I have had our cars (unlocked) rifled several times in the past. I like the motion detection features as it would enable us to see if our cars are being canvased.

Re: Video Cameras?

How many cameras come with the DVR for $190? Cameras should be OK. I prefer true night vision and not IR.

Aspeck, it comes with 4 cameras and an 8 channel DVR. Here is the link. Zmodo 8CH/4Cam Sony CCD Security System

btw, looks like I have lost any chance to stop by and visit you. My daughter and her husband just moved from Kutztown to Lubbock TX. She hated to leave there but they were really loading her down with work and not increasing her pay (reduced staffing, budget cuts, etc) so she found a much better job in Lubbock. Texas is really humming you know. It is one of the least burdensome states with very reasonable taxes.

...Oh and can you post a link to any true night vision cameras. I really did not realize there was a distinction. That is why I am asking questions and not jumping on the first 'deal'!

Re: Video Cameras?

Look for a low lux camera that is not IR, something in the .1 lux range. The problem with cheaper IR cameras is that the illuminator does not cover a very big area (15-25 ft). These say 65 ft. so plan on 25 ft. of decent light. Picture yourself out there in the pitch dark with a penlight. A super low lux camera makes the whole area look like daylight in near complete darkness. Also, cheaper cameras will produce a very grainy picture in less than ideal lighting.

They sell those same cameras (Sony but a 1/3" ccd) on Amazon for $25 - $45 or so a piece- I have 2 and they work extremely well.

Re: Video Cameras?

Sorry I did not get back here sooner, Boom, but Jeepman answered the question.

I have not looked recently, but I think you can get better cameras for less, or the same money.
