VHF antenna ? and installation ?

I just picked up a Uniden Solara VHF radio and looking for info about antennas and mounting the antenna. The boat will be used mainly on Lake Mead and Mohave, big reservoirs, 60 miles long. I searched and still have a couple of questions:

- I have a dual console 18' Crestliner Superhawk, where would be the most common place to mount the antenna? From the consoles fore and aft, it's 8' or less, 7'11" beam. With the antenna mount, the antenna will most likely stick out a couple inches, which I want to avoid. I have seen a couple boats similar to mine where the gunwales are clear fore-aft, but my consoles hang completely over the gunwales, limiting where I can mount and store the antenna. I have 3 rod holder bases mounted down the gunwales aft of the consoles, so the antenna being stored would interfere with the rod holders, or the other way around. Here's a pic of the gunwale/console, minus the rod holders.

- Is there going to be a (long term) problem storing the antenna bent to the shape (radius) of the gunnel going forward from the console?

- From your experience, have you experienced problems with the antenna mounted 2' from the radio, interference, static, etc? (antenna is supposed to be 3' away from what I've read)

- 3' antenna or 6'? Inexpensive or high dollar? Going with a 3' antenna will resolve my installation problems, but will cut down on the range, not sure if this is going to be a big consideration at this point, could be a huge problem.... I fish in the canyons of Lake Mohave a lot and don't know what to expect for VHF reception there, probably none due to the canyons. I'm mostly concerned about reception out on the big basins and having radio reception in an emergency, while on the big basins. I won't be using the radio for boat-boat communication, most likely leaving it off most the time.

- I haven't been able to find out where the NPS VHF antenna's are located on these lakes and what type of reception to expect. Does anyone know where to find this info? I haven't called the park service yet.

Thanks, Dan

Re: VHF antenna ? and installation ?

By no means am I claiming to be a radio expert or an expert on Lake Mead, but I will share my personal experience.

I also have the Uniden Solara. My radio is connected to a Digital 528-VB antenna. This is a 4 foot antenna. Most on this forum will recommend 8 footers, but the 4 footer solved a lot of installation problems for me, and I am always boating on inland lakes. If I was offshore I would probably want an 8 foot antenna, but my set-up seems to meet my needs. Digital brand atennas are as good as any and I have been very happy with the performance of my set-up.

I just went to Lake Mead for the first time during the first week of August. The basins are huge, but each basin seems to have a marina reasonably close. At all times I was able to communicate with a marina. I don't know where the NPS puts their antenna, but I do know that I always felt like my set-up was sufficient to reach a marina at Lake Mead.

I have never been to Lake Mohave so I cannot comment on VHF use in those canyons. I have been on Lake Powell with my set-up. Lake Powell is also a canyon lake and I was surprised that I seemed to get good VHF reception throughout most of the lake. I have since learned that at Lake Powell the NPS has an antenna on Navajo mountain. That mountain can be seen almost everywhere on the lake, and because VHF is line of sight, you can get good VHF reception almost anywhere. Most of the cell phone carriers have antennas on Navajo mountian, so cell coverage is fairly good also.

I am sure there will be others on this forum that will argue that you should not have anything less than an 8 foot antenna. They are probably correct, and you should listen to their opinions, but I found that I have been more than satisfied with my Digital 4 footer on Lake Mead and Powell.

Wouldn't the marina operators at Cottonwood, Katherine, or wherever be a good source for radio info on Mohave?

Re: VHF antenna ? and installation ?

Thanks guys,

I stopped by the LMNRA visitors center this morning and asked about NPS VHF coverage. There is an antenna on Mt Wilson (5000'+) that covers most of Lake Mead, another up in the Virgin basin, Mt Pitkin (5000'+) that covers Lake Mohave, then all the VHF from the marina's. With this amount of coverage I'm going to get a 3-4' antenna and see how it works. The ranger I spoke with said the worst reception area is up in Black Canyon, which is to be expected, but of little worry to me the water does not get that bad up in the canyon.
