Have a 97 evinrude 50 hp on my pontoon. I have 2 plastic 6 gal tanks with no vent screws on cap. The caps are always difficult to unscrew when removing then the air sucks in when finally opened. Ran a tank dry today till motor stopped.Changed tanks, squeezed bulb and wouldnt fire up. While waiting for tow from neighbor I pulled off the connector at engine and gas sprayed out under pressure. The caps are always tight and I assumed the other prong acts as the vent??but if thats the case the caps like I said are very hard to get off then air rushes in. Back at dock my neighbor says you should loosen the caps when running to vent.Sure nuff-loosened cap and fired right up.Just doesnt soung right??Info appreciated. Daveydoodle

Not too sound like a smart@$$, but are you absolutely positive they are marine tanks?? Never seen a portable tank that didn't have a vent in the cap..... if they are, if I were you I would seriously look into either buying new caps that have vents, or just buying two new tanks... I can tell you from experience, if the tank is not vented, you can crank that starter to your hearts desire, but once it's got that negative pressure built up, she ain't goin anywhere...

No smart___ taken, apprec. the comeback. Sure look like marine tanks with the hookup module on top for gas hose. Came with boat, like I said neighbor had em too on his toon. I am with you on the vent screw-always, had on other boats. Will chk marine store today for other caps.

I have one of those tanks and mine was doing the same thing. Where the fuel line plugs into the tank take that assembly out and look on the bottom for a rubber flapper valve mine was orange about the size of a dime and make sure its not stuck. Just be careful you cant buy that part.
