venting the gas tank?

I have an old boat with a 25 horse Johnson. The problem that I am having is the motor has been bogging down, and a couple of times stalled out. The engine doesn't run like this all the time. It runs really good for a while then it will bog down. When it stalled out, it started up and ran fine for awhile. A friend of mine told me that I need to vent the gas tank. What does this mean and how do you do this.

Thank you,
Patrick

What year motor? Does it have a single line or dual line tank?

Can't be ... dual line deal ended ~ 1960.

Re: venting the gas tank?

1985 would have a single fuel line and a fuel pump. If that's what you have, then the tank must be vented. And an OMC factory tank would be vented. You can try cracking the gas gap and see what happens or try pumping the bulb in the fuel line when it bogs to see if that helps. If it does help, but starts bogging again when you stop squeezing the bulb, then it could be the fuel pump.

If your tank has two lines, then the motor can't be a 1985. They stopped using the dual line pressure tanks around 1960.

Sorry, I thought that you were talking about the line between the tank and the motor.

Re: venting the gas tank?

I just wanted to say thanks for everyone's help. I took my boat out last weekend, cracked the vent on the top of the gas cap, and the boat ran great.

Sorry about all the confusion with the gas line. It is a single line. I am very new at boating, so please bear with me a little.:D
