Vent Cap on 9.9 honda outboard

Hi All,

Just bought a 2001 Honda with a 3 gallon plastic tank. The tank is kept in storage in a non-vented compartment on the sailboat... and the gas line is disconnected from the motor when I put it in storage. I've been making it a point to close the vent in the gas cap. It is quite difficult to close but I make sure it is snug.

Problem is I still get a gas vapor smell in the storage compartment and in the cabin of the boat...not to strong but objectionable.

I have checked the gaskets on the cap and vent and they are in good shape with no sign of leaking in the gas line or at connections. When I disconnect the line to put away the tank I sometimes get a few drops of gas that spurts out. Would that be enough to cause a smell that last for a week?

I can't quite figure out either how this vent thing works either....there seems to be a solid threading of the vent into the clear plastic gage cover. I don't understand how air get in or out!

Thanks for your thoughts on this gassy matter!:lol:

I believe that you will find that the majority of OEM (including Honda nd Tohatsu/Nissan) 3-gal OB tanks are made be Scepter in Canada. They are pretty reliable, and the gauge-in-cap assemblies are interchangeable if you damage one.

The vent screw closes off an o-ring type of gasket against the clear fuel gauge. When open, the tank vents through the threads of the screw If your vent gasket is old or dried out, or if it was ever over-tightened, the vent may not seal well. Keep in mind that even a few drops of gas will stink for days in a small compartment, so a few drips when disconnecting the hose may be all that you need for the smell to remain in the compartment.

Better to see if you can find a vented location for the tank.

Re: Vent Cap on 9.9 honda outboard

Thank you Paul.

The storage compartment I keep the tank in is walled on the back by the transom of the boat....it does have a hole through it that goes out near the motor mount (with a rubber cover on the outside.) I assume at one time someone ran the gas line out that way...which I plan to do myself, leaving it hooked up to the motor and avoiding the gas dripping onto the line or tank when I disconnect. Then, to vent the tank I thought of taking of the screw vent cap off and placing hosing over the nipple of the vent opening in the cap that would run out through the same opening in the transom, to allow venting to the outside. What do you think about my idea? :joyous::grumpy::lol:

I have seem several "marinized, permanent" portable tank setups. If done correctly, they work fine. Don't allow the vent hose to get into water. Keep in mind that you will still want to disconnect the fuel line at the motor to allow the carb to run out at the end of every day.
