1:1 tranny, fresh rebuild by amateur (no, not me, better than that) . . .

I am running on a stand in my garage (350 PCM Engine). If I move the selector to reverse, the engine lugs and wants to die, it does turn the correct direction. I can keep her running with some throttle, but seems like more load than there would be with a prop in gear.

If I move to neutral or forward, no change in engine load between the two, and I don't need any throttle to keep her running from the 700ish idle speed I am using. I cannot get the output flange to stop spinning in neutral with pretty strong applied force. I am using a 1 x 1 wedged/levered onto the side of the spinning flange and the wood starts to smoke and the flange won't stop. Seems like it is in forward gear with selector in neutral.

I believe I confirmed that I could get it to act kind of right in all three places properly before I started running her, but I can't remember how I did that. Maybe at crank speed, but I can't duplicate that now . . .

Oh, I also get a slight screech/squeal when the RPM drops to the point of almost stalling and then I catch it with the throttle. Seems to happen in all gear positions though, so might be unrelated . . .

I do have a Service manual and it sounds like either a control valve issue, too tight of a pack clearance or a warped clutch plate. Any ideas before I tear into her?

Re: Velvet Drive 71C issue

Have you ever been able to stop the output shaft in neutral? If not the clutch pack could be stuck together or plates burned together.I don't know how you are shifting it but are you sure the linkage is adjusted to neutral correctly and not a little into forward? It could also have a leak in the control valve applying the clutch pack. For whatever reason it sounds like the clutch pack is applied, that is unless you can stop the output flange in neutral.I think if you correct this problem your reverse problem will go away.

Sounds like you have reached the same conclusions as I have. Never been able to stop the shaft since I got the engine running. I am shifting directly at the tranny by hand. No linkage, just runnng on a stand.

Sounds like time to go through it.I believe their pretty simple and parts are readily available.

marineengineparts.com has master rebuild kits for $169.99 or separate parts

Just to be clear, this thing has zero hours in the water. I even have the parts he removed and the discs look pretty dang good. We'll see maybe I can use some of these pieces . . .
