I'm sorta like Homerr, Looking for an escape to a new locality.

Just got the prices on vehicle registration and shocked to death. Cars went from 21 to 40, non com truck from 35 to 48, trailer from 10 to 15.

So what do you pay for registration in your state. Just curious, it could have an impact on our decision on a location for retirement. Thanks

Re: Vehicle registration Fees

$80 for the truck due this month and $40 for the car. Pop-up is $14 and don't know about the boat or trailer yet as I haven't registered them yet. Why pay sales tax and reg. on something I can't use yet.

Ive see people get hung up over a old car in the yard on this because of a unrelated incident.

Re: Vehicle registration Fees

I really don’t pay attention to it anymore. It got so out of hand in California most new cars were into 4 figures for their registration. Maybe a few hundred bucks for a car made in the last 10 years. Something inline with what Kiwi Phil pays.

Funny thing was, for a short time the Republicans controlled California’s legislature. They removed a lot of the car registration burden. Shortly after the Democrats regained control, they started marketing the plan to return to the higher fees as “putting the fees back to where they rightfully belong”.

The bill that put the vehicle registration fees “back where they rightfully belong” took effect in Oct 2003. Ar-no’d took effect in Nov 2003. Within minutes of his inauguration, with a stroke of a pen, he whacked the fees back to the previous, lower level. It was a key plank of his campaign platform and he kept his word! He also promised to save us … we’re still waiting for that.

So, anyways, I don't know what the registration fees are this month. In California we don’t pay just a registration fee. We are privileged to annually pay:

- registration fee
- vehicle license fee
- weight fee
- special plate fee (only of you have special plates)
- county/district fees (note: this fee is plural! … don’t know why)
- ownership responsibility fee (because we’re irresponsible in Calif?)

I really don’t know what all these fees are but I’m sure I owe them and it’s my duty to willfully pay them and I’m sure all that money is going to good use somewhere in our bankrupt state.

Re: Vehicle registration Fees

Here is the breakdown of the registration I have just paid.
Vehicles here are rated on the number of cylinders they have.
For a 4 cylinder vehicle I just paid

CTP (insurance for 3rd Party injury. This pays compensation to any person injured) $358

Motor Vehicle Fee $187.25
Traffic Improvement Fee $ 38.15
Total paid on time $583.40
Late payment $623.40

So the figure I quoted in 1st reply was wrong. I read the late payment fee.

My 6 cylinder car was $718.95, so that was $135 more (not the $200 I quoted). So I believe an 8 cyl to be probably $850. (not the $1,000 I quoted).
You still have to insure your car for both 3rd party damage to another vehicle and comprehensive cover for damage to your own vehicle.
I am pretty sure I have everything correct this time.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Vehicle registration Fees

wajajaja, Thanks for the Info. As it's out of sight out of mind nobody knows about it but I was planning on reg. everything this month or next. I guess I'll do it this month. As the Boat and Trailer are cover by my Car insurance which is paid There is no fraud. and I see unregistered boats and trailers all the time down at the shore. I do agree they need to be registered though.

NJ is a copy-cat state! We had that in Calif first!!! :D

First offense was an automatic additional $100 fine in the late 70’s, the last time I tested it. :) I don’t know the amount now, but it’s automatic forfeiture of the vehicle on the second offense for either no registration or no insurance.

We are required to show proof of insurance before we can reg our vehicles. Almost no one that is low income can afford the reg and ins in Calif so they buy a 30-day policy from a company in New Mexico. That's enough to get the reg then the ins expires.

Re: Vehicle registration Fees

In SC they max out the sales tax at $300 when you buy a vehicle (car, boat, motorcycle, etc) but then they charge you Personal Property Tax on the damned things each year, forever as long as you own it. I paid $140 last year for a '94 Toyota Celica. One woman in line with me to pay was saying that the property tax on her Escalade was more than on her house... good old SC. And they STILL sell liquor by the drink in bars in mini bottles. Come to SC, go back 50 years in time.
