Valve setting on a 3.0 Volvo?

Hi again!

Just a quick thought that a fellow IBoater named Ron brought up: I bought a new base engine last year from Michigan Motorz. It's a 3.0 GM. Now the problem is that (i think) i can hear 1 valve slightly knocking. I think that it's a valve, but it could be something else too. Considering it's a new engine, what could cause the valve to knock? Are there any procedures how to set them?

Alex

yo,
I would fix your carb first and have the engine running well before you attempt any valve adjustment. Otherwise, you may compound any existing problems making it harder to figure out exactly what's wrong.
I thought you said the brand new engine came with the cylinder head installed so chances are you do not have to adjust them. I can tell you from first hand experience that they are somewhat touchy, if you go too loose on the adjustment the motor will backfire at high rpms. I've done mine and the valvetrain is still noisy and clacky, it sounds almost like a diesel at idle. I think it is characteristic of that engine.

the setting is 3/4 turn down on the rocker arm nut from zero lash.
if you are unfamiliar with how the procedure is performed:
http://www.cranecams.com/?show=techarticle&id=2
http://www.cranecams.com/pdf/151g.pdf

Ok Ron! Will do that! Thanks again... Will post of the new findings when a new repair set for the carb arrives :D It was just a thought since you mentioned it. And yes, it is a brand new engine - it's hard to believe there is a valve knocking...
