Valve Cover Breather?

Got a 3.0 LX here, trying to get the breather connected to the flame arrestor correctly.

Any tips? It came with a hose that just blows right off. The outlet is sloped, and there is no barb or anything, doesn't look normal.

I bought a 90 degree elbow hoping that was is, but the one I got isn't secure at all.

Anyone know what I need to do?

First pic is old hose, second it new 90. Neither works, just for reference.

Too much crankcase pressure?

If blowing hose off valve cover you should check first oil level/quality. Then make sure engine runs properly, if there's a miss or seems sluggish your issue may be timing related

Yeah, I went through all of that. Doesn't seem to make much if a difference. Maybe Ill throw the timing light on it, but would adjusting the spark timing really do much to dampen blowby?

Do I have the correct parts?

Seems to run fine. 135-140 PSI in all cylinders.

It does blow quite a bit of air and a little bit of oil out the valve cover.

with the hose wide open it should not be "blowing off" unless the other end is restricted Try a Ty-Wrap on it

So the stock setup is just a hose? No fittings?

That's what I'm really asking.

Most I/Os just vent the Crankcase to the Flame Arrestor. Some Volvos do have a PCV valve, but also have a Hose to the Flame Arrestor from one of the Valve covers. Just clamp the hose on the fitting as mentioned above

Most later engine (MPI and carb) now have a PCV valve. EPA regs. Earlier engines yes, just a hose to the flame arrestor. The hope is that the air being drawn in by the engine will also carry any crankcase vapours with it.

I think the Hope was, any Blowby, would raise the Crankcase Pressure above Atmospheric and that would push the vapours out

Correct had the same issue with my 3.0 if i recall i was abke to rotate the flame arrestor to put some pressure on the hose kind of jamming itinto the valve cover nipple. Also i think the replacement hose needed to be trimmed an inch …Never really stayed on well

Huh, yeah you'd think they'd give you a hose barb or something on the dang valve cover. It's even tapered to assist blowing off. Not a great design, bad even.

Looks like the earlier models have something like that, but I also need the fitting that anchors the throttle cable for the a Mercarb.

Yeah not the best but I just got used to wiping the oil off the valve cover. Was a very reliable engine that withstood a lot of abuse tubing and skiing with my kids so no complaints on my end

The hose is swollen. Replace with new. My LX does the same I just haven't replaced it yet.
