what is the valve adjustment suposed to be on a 1985 mercruiser 170 4 cyl. engine.

inline GM 6 cyl.?
Mercruiser 4 cyl. fresh water cooled(470-488 type)?

The 170 is not a GM 4 cylinder. They are 140's. You have a 470. Go up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of the forum and download manual #8. It covers how to adjust the valves. If you need a valve adjustment, then you have problems with the lifters or the valves. The only way to adjust the valves is by changing push rods.
