I got screwed when I bought this motor....it has good compression on 3 cyl's...and 0 on the 4th. I am going to put it up for sale....long story short, I just want a fair price for it. Any ideas what would be a good asking price? I dont want the next guy feeling like I do, being I paid too much.

Info:

Located in central Florida
VRO disconnected and missing
All electronics are good and working
still Runs fairly well considering
Tilt and Trim work, slow leak
good prop 14x19 alluminum
lower unit good however skeg chipped
water pump good, cools great
controls, teleflex cables, and harness all good
normal scratches, chips on paint, but still looks good
looks like stator and coil is new

Thanks in advance for any help.

The motor is not worth rebuilding. It is going to be a salvage parts motor. Value $200-400....cost to repair $2,500

Re: Value of 1985 115 Johnson VRO?

Thanks for the reply Mastertech.

I got a couple of quotes for around $800, just one piston, for providing it doesnt need resleaving. I checked the cost of parts and it was around $300-450 including machine shop. Maybe parts and labor cost more in NY. Thanks for the input though.

I really hate the thought of parting out such a good running motor.

mnm, What length shaft is the motor? Why don't you try and fix it yourself. There are many posts here which will give you some ideas on how to begin. My opinion is that its not worth very much except if someone has a need for parts or someone can fix it. Another suggestion would be for you to invest in another motor that is compatible with the old motor and you have spare parts.

Thanks dude.

It is a 20 inch shaft.

I guess that is a good point. Kind of a scary thing to tackle given my experience.

I really do like the motor, it runs excellent with no load, on muffs.

I guess I will give that some thought.

Thanks again for the reply Dude.

mnm - Listen to Master Tech and also listen to what you wrote:

VRO disconnected and missing
Runs fairly well considering
Tilt and Trim work, slow leak
lower unit good however skeg chipped
good compression on 3 cyl's...and 0 on the 4th

Would you give $2-400 for an 18 year old motor that is in that condition? Not me.

whoops, I already did! Oh well, you made me feel a lot better! :( I guess the truth hurts.

Maybe I should just part it out. I know I would make my $ back.

Although I really would enjoy attempting the rebuild....I am sure I could do it, just not sure how long it would hold up

Ok, one more question, then I will drop it.

I guess the real question is what is it worth after the rebuild. I would guess around $1500-1800?

Thanks again Dude, Mastertech, and So Little.

Suggest that you check out ebay and estimate what you could get if you parted it out. My guess that you would get more that way than fixing it and selling it. $1,500-1,800 does not sound to bad to me if it were a fresh water motor. Don't think I would go for it if I knew that only one cylinder was fixed. You may also find that your $800.00 will grow to $2,000-2,500 once your $800.00 mechanic gets into it. Then where would you be?

Hey Musky, thanks for the reply.

Did you have to replace any rings, or just bearings? Any machining on any of the cylinders? How long did it take you total time? Was this your first one?

G Dane, I only have the one on the boat, it is a 19. I do have a chewed up one too that I was just going to toss out, you could have that one if you want. If I part it out I will keep you in mind. However I think the moderators of this board do not like people selling stuff here. My email is mnmfors@aol.com.

Re: Value of 1985 115 Johnson VRO?

Thanks for the input SoLittle. I was on ebay last night doing that last night. I have parted out a few and sold them on ebay in the past. It is kind of the luck of the draw tho, sometimes u get alot, sometimes you don't. Just depends if a few different people need the same part. And it is quite a bit of work.

About the $800 turning into 2500....good point. Although one of them was going to pull it apart for free and give me a quote. Small shop, and he could not tell me how long it would take...just said it would take a while.

About the one cyl. being fixed. When I first started messin around with boat motors, I couldnt believe that certified mechanics would only replace one piston and even punch out one and leave the rest stock. I have to this day not heard a mechanic say that it is wrong to do this and everyone I talked to say it is acceptable, just use weisco and make sure the weight is the same.

Re: Value of 1985 115 Johnson VRO?

Were I looking for an oldie but goodie I wouldn't have any problem with one where only one hole was redone if I knew that the others were checked. If I did not know the seller I might be a bit weary that he did a cheap fix so he could dump the motor.

mnmfors

Will try to figure out shipping costs from you to DK. So they do it too !!
