Looking at a 1973 100hp Evinrude on Saturday. The guy is asking for $500 without controls. Initially it looks like a clean motor. What can a guy reasonably expect to see/find on a visual inspection? He says he can test compression for us, anything over 100psi and even across the cylinders will make me happy, but I just want to make sure our butts are covered ( hate to spend even a cheap $500 for something we end up not being able to use ).

No controls is a major setback. If it has burnt or discolored paint on the powerhead is disaster. Can you put it on the muffs and see if it runs?

Be patient. Look for a complete boat with the motor no more than 20 years old. If you don't need another boat and trailer around, sell it when you're situated.

For $500, you must start it. If you can't hear it run, just walk away. The old, "It ran great the last time it was used" is bogus.

You could be spending lots of bucks on this after your purchase. Hear it run or walk.

You might want to find out what the model number is since there probably were no 100 HP OMC Outboards made in 1973.
