Looking at a '87 or '88 Johnson with an estimated 100 hours. Runs well, fired right up cold, compression is over 150 on all cylinders (i was told, but owner is happy to let me confirm it). I want to give fair price, but at the same time its a 20 year old engine without a real counter on it (far as I know). What would you pay?

I know nothing about outboards, or johnsons in general so I don't know if this is a good year, or bad etc.

Thanks

You didn't give enough info on the motor to tell.

The value of the motor depends a lot on who is selling it. If it's a shop that's standing behind the sale and courting you as a long term customer, the motor is worth a lot more. If it's just some guy from the list or the classifieds that owned it, you don't know what's true, or false about what he says, and he's done the minute the money changes hands. You're on your own from there. A lot of the time those old motors cost a lot more than the expensive shop motors because of the things nobody knew about.
