V8 Johnson, is an electric priming pump mandatory, or convenient?

I recently purchased from Craigslist, a 1995 Johnson 250 HP V8 Ocean Runner. I dont currently have an electric fuel priming pump, and the evinrude parts online says it is obsolete/unavailable. My guess would be that they dont recommend having a ball valve style because it might restrict flow? The starting procedure says to activate the priming pump for 20-30 seconds to prime the system, otherwise it is not used. Does anyone have any insight into the recommendation for using the electric fuel primer?

I have been looking all over the place about this. Will it be safe for me to continue using a 3/8" ball valve I had for my smaller V6?
