1981 Mercruiser 260. Engine has been swapped and wiring has been messed with and is a mess so wire colors are basically meaningless. What exactly does the solenoid physically mount to? The PO used one of the carb bolts but that seems kinda janky. What wires by (function and gauge) attach to which posts including the circuit breaker and starter? TIA!

There mounted in one of 2 places foward stbd side of the motor up front or to the right rear of the carb. The slave solenoid is used because the wiring to too far from the key to the starters solenoid so a slave is added. This allows a smaller gauge wire to be used in the harness.

Red or a Red/purple, always hot
Large Yellow.red going to the starters solenoid
Small yellow/red from the start position of the key switch
Black ground for the solenoid coil

Thx but i simply need to know by function and wire gauge not colors what does what. I removed the distributor to get better access it has a Delco EST ignition which I know how to install. I simply need to know post A with 10 gauge wire goes where etc... a picture of the top of an 80's v8 top or proper solenoid mounted would be of great help. Its a $1500 boat that I haven't even got to fire. Cant invest hundreds into a harness. Thanks.

For one there not hundreds, a lot less .a small yellow with a red stripe goes to a small lug, a ground wire from the other small lug
The large lug on top get a constant 12v, the other large lug goes to the solenoid on the starter. the inboard most small lug closest to the block.
