Hi

Looking for some advice hopefully someone can help me!

Recently purchased this 16ft Savage with a V4 115hp Johnson, Unsure on year as no plaque and has had cover changed at some point in its life. However is a 90degree, bubble back, cross flow (from what i can work out) has two Power Packs one on each bank. I ran the motor on hose when purchasing boat (bad move no taking for test i guess)

First of all it had shift cable problems which required new control box (all replaced and engaging both gears perfectly)

then took it for its second test which showed up that it wouldnt power up onto plane
found a port side power pack was dead (replaced with working second hand unit)

now the issue i'm having is you power the engine up and it powers up onto plane quiet easily however when doing it sometimes

it has what i believe is a miss fire or ignition cut and the outboard shakes a bit and jumps a little then it goes again i have tried to get a video of it doing it however hard when your alone in boat. my question is, is it a miss fire or ignition problem or is it possible its jumping out of gear and straight back in. the later i feel is impossible (as it doesnt seem to raise the rpm when it happens)

thanks in advance for any help offered

Wow, that's got to be pretty significant to make the engine shake like that.

One thing to check is that forward gear is fully engaged. Disconnect the shift cable from the linkage at the engine. Manually move the linkage to reverse, then forward, then back to neutral. Now make sure that the shift cable end matches up with the position of the linkage. If not then adjust the trunion 'til it does.

Also manually move the shift linkage to forward, then move the control box to forward and make sure the cable end is moving far enough.

With stuff like this check out the cheaper stuff first. Have you tried a fresh set of spark plugs? If these are new the second thing I would look at is whether the ignition switch is dropping out. Do you have a tach and if so do you observe a fluctuation on the tach when this occurs? If so I would try swapping out the switch or at least check the integrity of all your connections there.

thanks for the help guys, I have replaced spark plugs and test all leads for high resistance! All show up good, there is no fluctuation on the tacho when this occurs. took for another test this morning forgot phone but same thing happening however sometimes it's good then on way back to ramp it broke the lever that connect the gearbox shift rod to shifting lever from cable under powerhead so maybe it is gearbox related! I have a spare gearbox here that came with boat so I might swap the impeller and prop over and once I get new shift lever block I'll try again!

Your shift lever is certainly broken. May be the main reason you've encountered shifting problems. The bolt on the left side is likely not stock. Replace it with a new one and see what difference it makes. 318539 supercedes to 326642. The 642 is a special order with Bombardier. This US dealer has 10 new ones in stock. You can call the dealer and give them a credit card and the'll send it to you quicker than you can get a special order thru Bombardier.

Got a new shift lever today, I'm in Australia so found a good second hand one for free of a old guy today! Went to fit up the spare gear case that came with the bot and the prop shaft is different spline mine was the 13 and this one is 15 so I'm trying to find a prop to borrow and see if it fixes the issue! I did drain the gearbox oil out of mine and there was small amount of metal filings on the drain bung so hopefully it's the problem!

It's common to see a few filings each time you change the gear oil. The clutch in the lower unit is sort of a misnomer. It's actually a somewhat violent collision between the clutch dog and the gear face each time it's shifted. A few filings are normal.
