ok. so I got my V4 115 running like a top after a power head swap and two carb rebuilds. (1985) Now, when I tilt the engine up, fuel drips out of the carbs into the engine well. not a lot but enough. when I then squeeze the bulb up to pressure with the engine tilted down fuel drips out and the engine floods easily taking 20-60 seconds to get het started... but this is not every time. other times she starts right up. I checked the float level and everything is good on both carbs. could the electric choke solinoid be leaking??? Maybe faulty part of the time?

Ideas? At least once she starts she runs like a top for the day!!!

how far up is it tilted?

I got into a little too shallow of water once, and had to tile my (1983 115hp) pretty high to keep it from running-aground. Then the thing wouldnt start.
I was stuck there for a while trying to figure it out.

turns out the engine just doesn't run when tilted too much.
(figured that out after I got towed back in)

You didn't say what year.

It does not matter how far up it is tilted. If fuel runs out the carb throats, then the float valves aren't closing properly.

If gas comes out the carb throats when you squeeze the primer bulb, there's only one possible reason for that -- a float valve that doesn't close completely.

If float level is set correctly (and no doubt it is), then the only other possibility is that the valve needle & seat are worn out & need replacing.

Unless maybe some little foreign object has gotten in there to hold it open.

[note to bigB -- Not surprised the motor won't run at the most extreme tilt angle, but I am surprised it won't run at any tilt angle in which the water intakes are submerged.]

Also, do you have plastic float bowls? They may be warped and not sealing well(aka leaking). But I do also think you have a stuck float or needle valve.

Yes, the primer solenoid valve can leak and flood the carburetors.

ok...I thought I knew a little about carbs.... having had a stuck float valve that would not allow any gas to enter the bowl...

I am wondering how a stuck float valve can prevent gas from LEAVING the bowl and going into the throat area?????

I am thinking the float has nothing to do with that....only with the amount of gas COMING INTO the carb, from the fuel pump.

i have had a ton of leakage on my 115...and every time I had thought it was gas coming out of the carbs....

the mechanic told me if it does that it is flooding..

but i had leaks out the side of the bowl where the brass ball is pegged into a hole, i have had leaks coming out of the vapor seperator connection!!!(bad o ring) I had a leak on the inside of the cowling were the fuel line comes in....

but believe it or not the motor always seemed to run great!!!

so does the float valve-seat have anything to do with gas leaving the bowl and going along its way into the motor????

thanks

A needle and seat can stick both ways, closed, and no gas gets into the carb. Open, and the gas will not shut off and continue to run and overflow the carb.

I can't think of any way that the float valve can influence the fuel getting drawn out the bowl into the engine.

I am not clear as to where fuel is leaking out of. Is it the carb throat or the bowl gasket area? I just got done replacing my float bowls due to being warped and fuel leaked all over myengine everywhere. That is why I brought it up. I'm not there so I can't see what you are.I also had issues with it idling and flooding. Wipe the carbs down, and tilt the motor up. Watch to see where fuel is dripping from. It wouldn't take long if there is a leak.
