I got another question concerning my "OMC E140TRL CNB lower-unit V4 140 Hp from 1982 - problem". Some guys say that from 1978 - 1991 the parts are interchangeable, some guys say one has to exactly look it up in the parts catalogue and match the numbers thouroughly. Do all V4-modells with 90, 115 or 140 hp from all these years easily fit in my 1982 140 hp powerhead and do I only have to screw it tight with a new rubber washer or would one first have to work on the parts to make them fit, like grinding, drilling etc.? Appreciate your help Holger from Germany

If anyone can offer me a lowerunit that fits my E140TRL CNB, Evinrude V4 140 Hp for less than 300$ he is welcome. also the drive shaft that actually broke in my case would be welcome, how can such a drivshaft breake into two peaces without any ground contact, do you think it is worse to use the old gearcase just with a new driveshaft? or would you expect further problems in the gearbox?
Thanks for your opinions
Holger

Hi Holger. I'm no help with your questions, except to say I'm running an '83 140 TR. It is, of course, 20yrs old and runs very well. I hit the ocasional stump or log with no damage. I don't think you have a cream-puff, just that one in a million bad part.

Re: V4 gearcase problem, what years fit in my 1982 140hp

Thanks guys, any information about this motor is apreciated, do I have to seal the lower unit when I exchange it, what about the waterpump, is it enough to exchange the impeller. DO you think the 1982 140 V4 is a good motor? Here in berlin we are not allowed to drive fast, that means when I am out fishing that the motor is often driven at around 2.500 RPM, would that damage the motor. many people say that such a motor needs to be driven fast, otherwise it will be bad. is it the right motor for me, should I repair it with a lower unit or should I try to get a 60 Hp 2-stroke somewhere cheap. At least I got the well working powerhead for free, but it swigs petrol once you drive it fast
Your opinions guys

Any V4 gearcase from 1978 and newer will work. Some V4 gearcases were the size and dimension of a V6 case. If you use one of those, a V6 prop is required. Some of the newer driveshafts dont take the O ring at the top, newer models had the O ring in the lower seal plate. If you use a newer driveshaft make sure you coat the splines with a good waterproof grease and redo it once a year.

Its always a good idea to replace the entire waterpump assembly rather than just the impeller. You should pressure and vacuum test any "used" unit before you install it. Reseal if needed.

V6 gearcases will also fit from 1979 on. Again, a V6 prop is required.

Good luck!

Re: V4 gearcase problem, what years fit in my 1982 140hp

Thank you for your input,
if there are V4 modells with V6 gearcases, does that mean that only the physical gear units with its gears cogwheels etc. are exchangable and that the lowerunit housings are v4 housings, or that some of the V4 had housings with V6 fit. In other words, are V4 and V6 direct bolt ups, are all Hp V4 with any V4 from 1978-early 1991 always direct bolt ups, Or do I have to look into the part catalogues. I want to be absolutely to be absolutely sure, we are talking about hundreds of dollars shipping costs
What is your opinion Dhadley about my motor typ?

"L" is for 20" shaft type. The V4 crossflows were a very decent and reliable design that OMC used for many many years.

All 20" V4's from 1978 on used the same bolt pattern as the V6's and V8's. However, you should know the year of the replacement as not all internal parts were interchangable.

Good luck!

Re: V4 gearcase problem, what years fit in my 1982 140hp

I am happy to be in contact with real profis, if the bold patterns of the V4, V6 and V8 are the same, do I have to care if the internal parts are the same, assuming that the drive shaft fits into the motor and the thing with the prop.
I mean if the outer parts of a gear fit with each other I don´t care how the gearing takes place, or is that to simple?

You should know what the unit was off of so if you ever do need to order internal parts they will be the correct ones. Saves time and (most importantly) money.

Good luck!
