hey all,

i reacently purchased a 1974 22 foot fiberform boat and am tryen to id the motor and out drive so i can trouble shoot some issues, i know that the motor is a chevy v8 more than likely a 350. i have done a lot of research to try and figgure out what motor it is and can not find a id plate anywhere that has been sugested on the internet. the outdrive has a plate on it and it says PZ NR 28008858 and that is all i can find anwhere on the outdrive. i think the motor has been rebuilt reacently but that is just a hunch. Any iformation that you can provide would be very helpfull as i am missing a good portion of the pink salmon season cause i cant figgure it out.

Well, the 28008858 number indicates a 280 outdrive, but they didn't exist in 74, but it could also be a different drive or upper gear box.
Pictures will probably help more than numbers. Especially if things aren't original.

And what exactly are your problems. In the older equipment it wasn't that much different from one year to the other.

Thanks for that info don i really do appriciate it. The issues i am having are the oil light is on no matter what rpm i am at, the engine smokes pretty bad from what appears to be the rubber hoses in the exhaust just after the manifold assy. It also smokes from under the exhaust manifold from what appears to be the head. Before the oil light came on it seemed to desel with a lot of valve rattle then cut out. Im gunna try to uplaload a pic of the motor we will c if it works.View attachment 106243

What you have there is an invitation to a disaster.
From what I can see, the distributor and carb are both automotive. I really can't expect much better for the alternator, starter, and the worst of all, the fuel pump.
All the parts mentioned are marine specific to prevent fuel leaks and sparks in an enclosed engine compartment.

I wouldn't start it on shore, let alone put it in the water and go fishing.
