Do deck boats suffer from what I heard described as "v-hull wonder"?

Yeah, but there are still variables. You can combat the wander with things like engine trim, tabs and props(4-blade). My friend up in ADK has a CC deck boat and it's got some slow speed wander to it. I had him trim up his motor a bit and it helped.

I'm assuming you are meaning the deck boats that have a tri-hull under them. They will have very little wandering, but can still do it a little. Those three hulls have a lot of directional stability inherent in them. Some deckboats have a typical modified v hull under them, so obviously they will POSSIBLY wander around some.

I have a Tahoe deck boat and it wanders the same as my v-hull did. My deck boat has a modified v-hull with the Mercrusier alpha drive. If it had the bravo 3 drive or the Volvo duo-prop the wander would be next to nothing. The reason it does this is because the hull is designed to operate at planing speed.

Don't let it impact your decision making, as just about every boater gets used to the v-hull wander . . . Happens only at trolling speeds.

My fiance loves to go on the Erie Canal, though TBH w/ the speed limit/no wake it is not all that fun to control.

I put a set of Smart Tabs on my 20' Sea Ray Seville V-Hull. The wander was very apparent before. It's completely gone now that the tabs are on. I would HIGHLY recommend them. Bought them right here on iBoats.

Brown is correct in his Bravo 3 comment. My Hurricane has a low angle deadrise (12.5 degree) and the Bravo 3 drive makes it behave great at low speeds, especially docking..... very manuverable at low speeds, great hole shots and great handling at high speed. I also have read lots of threads in a number of forums (including good ones listed here!) that rave about the success of trim tabs greatly helping or even completely eliminating the wander problem to not have confidence in trying them as a solution. So if you're not in the market for a Bravo 3 drive, then get trim tabs!

Good luck
