Hello all.. Hope I am posting this is the right forum..
To cut to the chase, I recently acquired a 1970 Century Mark II, and I am in the process of swapping the engine. It originally came with a chrysler 318 (225hp), and I am wanting to swap the engine to a more powerful engine. The engine I am looking at is about 330HP. The engine I'm putting in the boat will not bolt up to any readily available transmissions, which means that I am looking at basically starting from scratch. I plan on fabricating a custom bellhousing, so that's not an issue.
The Chrysler engine is a reverse rotation engine, rotating counter-clockwise when looking at the front. The engine I'm using rotates clockwise looking at the front. The stock Century setup is a paragon setup, it uses a PV31R gear which is a 1:1 direct drive. However, unlike velvet drives I understand that the Paragons can not be rotated opposite for what they were originally designed for. So, that means that the setup I have is probably not going to do me any good.
I have the following questions.
1. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best transmission for my application?
2. What is the point on some of these to having gear reduction? Is it for better prop selection?
3. Were the paragons overall good gears? Ideally if the paragon was a decent setup, theoretically I could find a similar reverse gear to mine, and bolt it to my existing V-drive and be done? I've got a paragon in my Chris Craft, all original and I've not had any issues, and I've maintained it well.
