V-belt fitment?

How low in the pulley should a V-belt sit? Today I went to NAPA to replace my water pump/alternator belt. Somehow between the time I took it off the motor and the time I went to reinstall it, it became way too long???????

The original belt was a Goodyear and the back of it fit flush with the top edge of the pulleys. The new, shorter NAPA equivalent was noticably wider and when I set it in the pulley it only sits about 1/2 to 3/5ths of it's thickness down into the pulley, in other words, almost half of it is sticking up out of the groove. The angle looks okay, best I can tell.

The NAPA people said the belt was equivalent and just a difference in design theory.

Any opinions here???

Should sit about flush with the top of the pulleys. They obviously gave you the wrong width belt. They do come in different widths also.

Re: V-belt fitment?

Auto/marine belts are made in 5 different widths - 10.7mm(11A), 13.3mm(13A), 17.3mm(15A) 18.8mm(17A) and 22.8mm(20A). Most common is 11A & 13A.

My 302 has 11. A 13 (sound like that's what they gave you) will not sit snugly into an 11mm pulley. It will cut and split because it's riding on the edge of the pulley.

About 2/3rd of the belt needs to be inside the pulley groove, not touching the bottom.

Cut your old belt, run it along a tape measure for length, measure the width - go back to napa and TELL that idiot saleman (I use that word loosely) what you want - IMhumbleO :)

Re: V-belt fitment?

I brought them the old belt. Can't be sure it was the original profile but it seem to fit in the pulley a lot better than their replacement. I will take it back with a pulley in hand as well. I'll have them look it up in their marine catalogue as well. If they have an antique one, that is. :p

Thanks all.

They may have a wall mounted belt identifier, it's a devise that measures width and length.
