I live in a 100% electric house (no gas) and I am thinking about getting a generator for use in case of emergency (live in the snow belt). If I were to use my boats gas in the event of an emergency is there anything that would prevent my gas from being siphoned out? 2000 Maxum 1900 SC

I heard on newer cars there is something that prevents that.

Thanks,

There should not be any restriction beyond any trick to getting the fuel out of the tank. Sometimes boats have fill hoses that go around turns, making it hard to siphon the gas. If this is the case with you, I would recommend you remove the fuel pickup tube from the tank, and install a primer bulb on a long 3/8 fuel line. The line should be long enough to reach from the fuel tank to a jerry can to fill the genny.

Some newer boats have a screened insert in the fuel fill to prevent debris from entering, which would keep you from siphoning. I would assume your boat has an I/O, so unlike an O/B, you would have to install a primer bulb as was mentioned to pull the fuel from the tank.

There's one way to find out...try it.

The boat being under a foot+ of snow might also make it a little tough... :)

Give it a try, and see what you get.

Why not buy an electric fuel pump from a a car or a transfer pump and use barb fittings to hook in the gas line and pump it out like that?

after you hook up the hose to the tank, run it out the bilge drain hole so that your jerry cans will be downhill, and outside the boat.

There are a number of posts around regarding draining tanks due to bad fuel; same process would apply.

use common sense and be aware of grounding the can to help prevent a spark.

Some anti-siphon valves are tight enough that they will not allow a continued siphon even if you get it started with a primer bulb. The anti-siphon valve can be replaced with a standard hose barb but it would need to be re-installed in the spring. This by the way has nothing to do with siphoning fuel through the fuel filler.

If it is not super easy to do now, it will be way less easy when it is 20 below and 30mph winds. And in the lake effect snow belt, wading through four feet of snow?

Do it now into your gas cans.

Then if never needed, dump it back in the boat in the spring.

Although it sounds like a good plan I think he meant to use the boat gas after he burns through his gas can supply. To bad you couldn't just run a line from the boat to the generator.
