Using oil/gas mix in 4stroke

On this forum and elsewhere I have seen suggested that outboard fuel be burned in one's tow vehicle rather than left in outboard tank to deteriorate. Is this suggested only for 4 stroke outboatrds? I wonder about the effects of putting the 50/1 gas/ oil mixture of a 2-stroke into the tank of a 4 stroke engine.
Will this not risk carb or catalytic converter problems? What is the maximum mixture of 2-stroke to 4 stroke fuel that one might make without problems. Thanks for any experiences or info on this.

It really won't hurt anything as long as you do not give it a steady diet of it. The biggest risk is coating oxygen sensors.

I would add a little with each nearly full tank.

I've done it before with no ill effects.

My four stroke outboards burn straight gasoline. The engine oil has a reservoir and the oil cools and lubricates, just like a car engine. My motors don't burn any oil, and I would not put 2-cycle outboard motor oil in my fuel tank, or oil reservoir. I don't know if this helps, good luck.

Hey darnold:
I think what people mean is that if you got left over fuel mixed with oil that you can get rid of it by putting it in your tow vehicals gas tank. I don't think they mean by large quanities thought. I mean I don't think they mean to fill up the 26 gal. tank on your truck with 50:1 mix. But I have done it with five or six gals and then filled the tank up to delute it. As far as running it in your four stroke motor I wouldn't do it if it was mine because you can't get it deluted enough or less you have a large enough tank. Burn it in your car or truck and keep the fresh gas for the four stroke.
I guess my Dad always use to tell me that the solution to polution is delution. Just my thoughts. :)

Darnold, I wouldnt suggest anyone put anything besides gasoline in their car... however, I am in the habit of getting LOTS of old, premixed out board fuel, usually 2+ years old...the stuff that doesnt make your eyes water goes straight into the tank of my 1977 F250 Beater pickup, no EFI, no Catalytic converters,7 mpg....I run it all summer, same plugs in the motor that have been in there for last 6 years...I dont idle the motor, and I use alot of right foot....I still use normal fuel in the winter, old stuff doesnt light so well in the cold...the best part is getting that 'outboard' smell runnin errands!

ODDD1,

Couldn't have said it better. It WAS a kick smelling the outboard mix in my snowblower (8 hp. Tecumseh) in Minnesota on a -20 day in Jan.

I once ran 5 gallons of the stuff through that 8 in one day! Had 29" of snow over 24 hours.

ODDD1,
People don't understand the comforting feeling of diesel fumes in the morning air.
I know my old Ford deserves every drop of lubrication she gets.

I use any leftover fuel in my 4-stroke lawn mower ! No oiling up problems as its usually operating a fairly high rpm.

Re: Using oil/gas mix in 4stroke

Thanks for all the input. I have put about one gallon of 50/1 ratio mix into my 86 toyota pickup with about 15 gallons of fresh gas and run it at highway speeds. It seems to run ok and not even a noticeable "outboard smell". I guess dilution is the solution. i guess the better idea would be to put the mix in older, simpler engines. Maybe I should mow the lawn more? Any other suggestions about disposing of old gas?
