Thanks for reading this post. I have a 1989 100hp Commercial E100WTLZ. I'm replacing the cylinder head, cylinder head cover, exhaust cover, and thermostat gaskets. Has anyone ever used an anti seize compound on the bolts of any of these parts? The OMC manual says to use Gel Seal II and/or OMC Gasket Sealing Compound on the bolt threads of these components. My recent experience of disassembling these parts resulted in several broken bolts on the exhaust cover and one broken bolt on the starboard cylinder head cover. I am a fresh water user. This is my first experience with the teardown of an outboard to this level. The bolts seemed to be very corroded i.e off white gunk around each bolt. Many of the threads appeared to have a goopy ?pipe dope? around them. In order to get the broken bolts out required the use of lots of PB Blaster and a Blue Wrench (torch). Although the OMC manual says to use the Gel Seal II and OMC Gasket Sealing Compound on the appropriate bolts, has anyone ever used an anti seize compound instead? I may never have to tear down this motor again, but just in case how critical is the use of the recommended compounds? Also, the Cylinder Head Covers contained lots of off-white powdery contamination in their galleys. Is this normal corrosion, or is this pipe dope crap that accumulated there? I?m assuming the motor was only used in fresh water before I purchased it in 2001. After I get it back together I will use it in fresh water only. This motor has performed flawlessly over the past eight seasons. I only noticed a slight water leak along the lower port exhaust cover while preparing it for this season and decided to tear it down. How common is this for the E100WTLZ? Thanks for any replies, and may we all have luck with the Walleyes in the coming season.
