Using a Fluke 87V as a DVA

Dear Forum,

I have the use of a Fluke 87V multimeter to do some checks on my ignition(CD Type) on my 90hp Mercury outboard, 1988 model year. My question is what scale should I use, the ac volts or the dc volts? I have been told that this is one of only a hand few that can be used in place of a DVA to check the ignition system on an outboard. THANKS.

The DVA is used to test the stator voltage which is a/c... so you would use the a/c setting.

I have used an analog automotive oscilloscope on outboards. You can check stator and trigger output, switchbox to coil, coil saturation, plug wires and plug fire time and volts, link and sync timing. Rectifier ripple can also be displayed.

Still need the adapter to do checks accurately.. the only meter on the market that has a built in DVA is the Electronic Specialties Inc.
