Did any of you guys ever take the rear axle of a '97 taurus with the disc brakes and put this entire unit under a trailer with a surge brake system? If you did, why is this good or bad?
I would really like to find out if it makes any sense to do this before I learn the hard way.
thank you, rolmops

Re: using a car axle

I did a similar thing once but had too many worries getting it certified for road use. Ended up removing the brakes and using the trailer as a winter stand for the boat. Pretty handy but not what I had in mind at the beginning.

Check with your authorities and get it all no less than 100% right. Being on the road with such a design could be a risc to all of us - and yourself,- plus your boat! Engineers building pro trailers deal with many aspects, structural, driveability, suitability for the purpose, safety and the stress put to it when it's in use (both use as meant to and some degree of misuse).

Think about it - and compare to offers on new/used, commercially built, trailers.

Just my 2c...
