I have two very strong running 1997 Johnson Oceanrunners. On the water they run great, once the boa is back on dry land, I noticed that I was seeing fresh oil dripping down the ides of one outboard. After chaeking for leaks, i found none...what I did find is oil puddling inside of each carb intake. Question is, does the height of where the oil resevoirs are mounted make a difference? THe engine in question has it's remote take a little higher than where the hose enters the cowl...could gravety and siphon have anything to do with this? I woudn't think that the carbs should be getting any il when the boat is not running and it certainly shouldn't be dripping out of the throats of the carbs.

Depends on the postion of the motors. Are they trimmed up and tilted back toward the boat? If so, this is normal. Unused oil and fuel will pool in the carb cover and eventually the engine pan. If you are getting oil in the carbs, then you most likely have a heat problem in the remote tanks. They will expand and push oil into the engine when they get hot. Simply turn the caps loose to vent the tanks.

Or you have some caps on the oil tanks that aren't vented properly.

The motors are tilted down..i would expect that some oil fuel would do that but not straight fresh oil. But the heat may be an issues along with the vent cap...didn't think of that. THese are the ones I put in on my first post....the boat is finished and new twins mounted thank to all of the great replies here. I did beef up the transom and am very pleased with the boat....pics to come. I did end up putting the oil tanks one over the other in a closed storage area which is exposed to the sun though. I will try that today and see if that is the issue, which I suspect....you guys are so smart...

The oil should not pass thru the OMS pump via gravity feed. You must have some other leak, incorrect carb float adjustment, faulty fuel primer(enrichener), etc.

Don't like to argue with you Chris, but if you have pressure in the oil tanks the oil will go into the carbs , float bowls and ect. This usually happens when the boat has been sitting for awhile.

That would take some pressure. The OMS pumps seal pretty well.

I've seen it happen down here in Fl a number of times.
