Used truck and boat purchase

After seeing how people ride their bikes and abuse things, I usually only buy new. However, I have recently purchased a used boat and used truck to pull it. The truck has 250,000 miles on it, but is tight like its new and it's a diesel anyway, so those miles aren't very important. The thing runs like a top and pulls like a horse. I already pulled my father out of the ditch when he stuck his F150 pulling his backhoe. I didn't even feel it. You can't beat the 7.3L powerstroke! The truck looks brand new. Inside and out. The same truck today with an engine that isn't as reliable is 50,000. I stole that truck for 6K and it has the 8 foot bed and a perfectly matching camper cover. For some reason, when I bought the truck, when the paperwork came in I have a copy of the drivers licence of the guy who owned it before me. He's 70 years old. He obviously didn't dog it out. He used it, but didn't abuse it. What's funny is that my dad's F-150 with a V6 gets about 11-12mpg when pulling my boat. My truck gets over 20mpg and it's a diesel and it weighs 2000 pounds more than my dads truck does. Truck is a 2001 model.

The boat is a highly sought after Ranger with a Mariner 150. It took me a little bit of work but I got that boat to like-new condition. That same boat today is about 35000. I got boat motor and trailer for 4500.

Oh yea, I got the dealership and boat owner to deliver each one to my house for free. Can't beat that.

And here is the boat. However this pic was taken the day after I bought it. I've since redone the trailer, repainted the entire thing including the rims. It looks far better than this now. Oh yea, it runs like a scalded dog with that 150. 120psi compression on all cylinders. The boat is all original, a 1990 model.

Looks real nice

I would only question your mileage at 20. If your number comes from the trucks computer then I would suggest doing some hand calculations. Have a buddy who has one similar (same engine but 3500) and it gets 12 to 14, but was getting 14 to 16 before Ford reflashed the computer

I consistently get 18 in my old IDI with a turbo when pulling my 5th wheel, but we have really tuned it and it is only 2wd and that is a lot of coasting down hills here in the Rockies.

Oh no, this truck is way too old to have a mileage computer. This is pump calculated mileage. Unless the pump is wrong, she got 22mpg. Now this was empty on the highway. 223 miles and it took 11.4 gallons. Pretty straightforward.

I had a 2000 Ford Superduty with the old 7.3 Powerstroke. On a trip to Florida and back I averaged between 21 and 22 MPG on the highways. Other than passengers and some gear it was unloaded.

I wouldn't question those numbers at all.. With a diesel, I would say you better be getting those numbers.... Otherwise, you need a tuneup... :) The rear gear can have a big impact on mileage. Maybe that's the issue with the low numbers posted above..

Nice scores! Get some new headlights (or restore the old ones), and the truck will look like new. I love the looks of that generation F250/350.

Huh? My '99 Dakota had one (well, I added an OE unit), and I believe some vehicles had them well before that. Of course, maybe not Diesels.

Chrysler had trip computers in the 84 model year for many of their higher end models and their sport models, Jeep then had them in the late 80's for their Grand Cherokee's, Ford introduced them in the early 90's for their Lincoln line and their police cruisers, trip computers with mileage have been around for over 25 years now. Cadillac had them in the 1979 Eldorado Biarritz model and the Seville models

The mileage is good but not 22 mpg, its 19.5mpg.
