I'm looking for a used gearcase head for the motor in my signature. I have a new seal and bearing already. I just need the head. I'm rebuilding my motor and I could reuse my head, but one of the 4 ribs that project from the prop side of the head has broken off. I believe that this should not have any effect on performance, but since I am rebuilding, I'd like to have unbroken parts.

Please let me know if you have a used head that you could sell to me.

Still looking. Does anybody have contact info for a boat salvage yard that might have a used head?

There is a salvage yard in the Toms River NJ area, that might have such a thing. However, I have no idea what part you want.

The salvage yard is Trixie's. They are actually in Bayville, NJ and have a website.

Thanks Chris1956, I'll try them. The gearcase head 'seals' the gearcase just in front of the propeller and the prop shaft runs through it.

Run a search for salvage yards, there is a list that has been on several posts.
It would be nice if someone would put that list in the Top Secret File so people could find and add to it.

I'll do a search and compile a basic list. Others can then add to it. Perhaps the moderators can then add that to the Top Secret File.

I know that we should be supporting iboats, but they don't sell many of these obscure parts such as a gearcase head without seals, especially for 1963 model year motors. That's why I am looking for a used one.

Re: Used Prop Head for 1963 75hp

I've tried about 10 of those guys and nobody has a used gearcase head (commonly called the prop shaft bearing carrier). It's frustrating because I have a 1961 parts motor but the head from it has a different part number than the head from my 1963 engine. Could be because the 1961 is manual shift and my 1963 is electric shift. All of those guys will sell me a new gearcase head assembly (#379327) which consists of the head, the bearing and the seal, but I already have a new bearing and seal.

I've learned that those 4 ribs that I mentioned in an earlier post help to keep out the fishing line and other crap. My head has 3 of the 4 ribs still intact, so I may reuse it.

If somebody is reading this for the first time and has a used head that they wouldn't mind parting with, let me know.

Still haven't found used head at any of those junkyards. I mentioned in an earlier post that the assembly number is 379327 which consists of the bearing, head, and seal. The head itself, which is all that I need, is part #308212. Does anybody have this used and would like to part with it?

If you're trying to get just that part, I would expect it wouldn't be easy. I would ask for a complete lower unit ... the junkyards aren't interested in a bunch of labor to get a one part sale.

Re: Used Prop Head for 1963 75hp

I finally found a used head at aomci.org's webvertize pages. Although it isn't strictly a salvage yard, aomci has many people that have used parts, including older parts that aren't available anywhere else. An ad on aomci should also be considered for anybody looking for a used part.
