Hi to all-

I live near Dallas and sometime this summer I struck a stump with my prop, a 21 pitch stainless quicksilver unit, and it bent my propshaft. I am a E-bay fanatic and found a used original mercruiser (not SEI) alpha gen 2 lower unit for 300 plus 60 shipping. I went ahead and purchased it. For the price of 360 its less than half of the SEI unit and the seller assured me its in good condition. I was leary, its a 1991 model, the first year for Gen 2 sterndrives but it looks great from the pics. I hope its lowtime. I used paypal so I do have recourse if it turns out not to be good. I am still running on the one that has a slightly bent shaft, it doesn't leak and the bearings feel fine, I just feel a slight vibration when I jump on plane, and it goes away as RPM goes up. If this works out, 360 for a good lower unit is a STEAL! I love doing more for less.

So why not open up the old unit and take the prop shaft out and straighten it with a press? I've straightened shafts with bends up to about 100 thou.... Using Vee block and a dial gauge it's dead easy, and the cost is an 'O' ring and a pinion nut....

Your talking to a guy that can set up ring&pinions, rebuild transmissions.. I'm not sure what model mercruiser you are refering to but I have looked into this and the amount of special tools is very daunting.. Do you know some secrets or some ways to make home made tools, or just the tools that are absolutely essential? Its got alot of runout, I would say more than 3/32

Gen I and Gen II lowers are almost identical internally, and use the same tools.

Just the covernut tool (91-61069T, $78 from iBoats, cheaper on eBay) and for the pinion nut I just use an open ended spanner. To pull the carrier out I use a pair of legs I welded up and a gear puller.... I also usually drill out the cover nut, so for the disassembly you would only need the legs and the spanner, no special tools at all. :D Then if you success in straightening the shaft, you can buy the tool and a new cover nut to put it all back together. You don't even have to take the leg off the back of the boat until you have the carrier out. (Here's a tip, it's easy to have the leg still on the boat to get the carrier out. :D)....

3/32" is less than 100 thou. It's not going to cost you to pull the shaft and see if you can straighten it.... If you succeed, you win....
