My outboard dilema is almost over... After having read every post on 2 vs 4-stroke and evaluating prices I had decided to buy a 2-stroke Suzuki 30hp (Mostly because of price). Then, I stumbled upon a used BF30 long shaft, pull start. They normally run at $5000 (cdn) and I found a demo with a full 2-year warantee for $3800.

The sting is that this engine, I found on a website from an apparently legit marina 500 miles away! I can't see the engine but have the option of not accepting the delivery if it is damaged on arrival.

My question is : since this motor has been run, I have no way of knowing the number of hours or how it was run. Is there a risk of internal damage from improper running? (Remember, it has the full warantee) Have I just found an incredible deal? Or is there more than meets the eye? Or what could I check for or ask for before they ship it all the way across Ontario.

pcet - I would be cautious on this one. I would almost say to drive the 500 miles to check it out rather than buy sight unseen. You should get a water test and do a compression check no matter what the seller says. Despite having a warranty - what kind of warranty service are you going to get when you are 500 miles away?

PCET,

If the engine you are intreresrted in, is from ibaots, I would be "comfortable" with it.

iboats, represents, "the best" of marine dealers.

The engine may have, 0 to 1000 hours, who knows. however, it's is backed up by a great organazation.

Well, I wouldn't have to drive 500 miles to service... Any authorised Honda Marine dealer can service the engine. If the engine, for arguement's sake, had bad comression, wouldn't the Honda waranty cover this?

This engine is sold as a demo WITH the original Honda 2-year warantee. It's just that it was used for various demonstrations or test runs (I can only guess). But from the pictures, it looks brand new!

I guess what I want to know is if something could have been done to it that wouldn't be covered by the waranty and invisible to an untrained eye.
